Pin-point accuracy - Levelling with the W 120 F

Wirtgen small milling machines can work with different types of displays and levelling systems. In the same way as the large milling machines, the state-of-the-art systems enable them to work with pin-point accuracy in any given working situation. Many different types of sensors are available for different requirements and environmental conditions.

The classical method:
Milling depth display in all working situations

The W 120 F is set to the specified milling depth manually by lowering the rear lifting columns. Two easy-to-read scales indicate the milling depth separately for the left and right side of the milling drum. A separate indicator at the rear right indicates the milling depth even with the support wheel swivelled in front of the drum.

Electronic milling depth display

The milling depth can optionally be adjusted electronically instead of manually: An automatic levelling system maintains the milling depth, and indicates target and actual values for both sides of the milling drum on displays at the operator's platform. It works with two wire-rope sensors or, alternatively, with one wire-rope sensor and one slope sensor.

LEVEL PRO - High precision and intuitive handling

The new, proprietary automatic levelling system LEVEL PRO from Wirtgen supplies information on the levelling process and enables the milling depth to be regulated from the operator’s platform. Intuitive and ergonomically optimized handling with user-friendly graphical displays and function keys is one of the system's many outstanding hallmarks.

The LEVEL PRO controller is the "brain" of the system. It evaluates the data transmitted by the sensors, controls the machine’s height adjustment, and then forwards these data to the control panel. The software with optimized control characteristics ensures continuously excellent milling results.

Different sensors are available to meet the different requirements on the accuracy of the final surface. All sensors can be connected to the LEVEL PRO system: Simply plug in, and here goes!

Please consult Parts and More for additional information on LEVEL PRO.

Field-proven sensors for any application

All sensors that are part of the Wirtgen automatic levelling systems are compatible with pre-installed sockets, so that any sensor type can be connected to any control unit. Adapters or special plugs are not required!

Wire-rope sensor

The wire-rope sensor is used for mechanical scanning at the side plate next to the cutting drum.

Ultrasonic sensor

Ultrasonic sensors are capable of non-contact measuring. They can scan both the height of the side plate and a reference surface next to or in front of the milling drum.

Transducing sensor

The transducing sensor scans a previously tensioned stringline.

Slope sensor

The slope sensor is permanently mounted at the chassis and works like an electronic pendulum. It is mostly used in combination with a wire-rope sensor, ultrasonic sensor or transducing sensor.

Laser sensor

Laser sensors work in combination with a rotating laser transmitter which defines a spatial reference surface with its laser beam. These signals are received by two laser sensors mounted on the machine. The cold milling machine has been levelled correctly as soon as the two sensors receive the signal at an identical height.

Sonic ski

The sonic ski is a multiple ultrasonic sensor which can be used for scanning a wire, as well as for scanning a reference surface.

3D system

A total station locates a prism on the milling machine to determine the precise position of the milling drum. These data are reconciled with a previously created digital terrain model of the surface to be produced by milling. Any deviation is immediately corrected by the automatic levelling system.
