Wirtgen hot-in-place recycling has gained acceptance worldwide as an economical method for rehabilitating bituminous road pavements. The benefits and rehabilitation options are manifold: Hot recycling fully reuses the existing pavement material while allowing the properties of the various mix components to be specifically altered at the same time. The fast-paced operation is carried out in-situ. When recycling is complete, the hot recycled pavements have been restored to the desired quality and functional properties.
The Repave method involves correction of the surface profile and subsequent application of a thin layer of virgin asphalt mix. Both layers are compacted simultaneously. This method is suitable for restoring skid resistance, equalizing deep wheel ruts, altering the cross slope or applying a new pavement overlay.
The Remix method allows the properties of the existing pavement to be altered by adding virgin mix and/or bitumen or rejuvenating agent respectively to specifically restore or improve its functional properties. Homogeneity of the recycled mix (reclaimed pavement material and new admixture) is ensured by thorough mixing in the recycler's twin-shaft compulsory mixer. The quality of the resulting hot mix compares with that of virgin asphalt mix.
Applications of the Remix method range from the rehabilitation of hardened or aged surface courses to recycling an excessively soft surface course while applying an asphalt overlay at the same time, if required. Remixing additionally enables the surface course to be converted into a binder course to strengthen the overall pavement structure.
The Remix Plus method allows distressed surface courses to be hot recycled by adding binding agents while overlaying them with a new wearing course of virgin asphalt mix at the same time. Compaction of both layers is carried out in one single working pass.
Prior removal of the existing surface course by milling enables the binder course to be remixed while placing a new surface course at the same time.
Yet another benefit is that a thin, high-quality wearing course layer with specific properties can be applied on top of the remixed layer (hot-in-hot application).
