SP 500 Vario - From kerbstone to motorway

Flexibility is the SP 500's hallmark. Its modular design enables the slipform paver to pave small monolithic profiles just as effortlessly as concrete slabs in motorway or airport construction.

Applications in offset paving

Slipforming traffic parapets

Slipform pavers are capable of slipforming stable parapets quickly and with economic efficiency. Reinforcing steel wire or pre-shaped reinforcing steel mats can be incorporated into the concrete profile by guiding them through the mould during the paving operation.

The offset mould can be mounted on the left or on the right side of the paver.

Shown here:

  • SP 250 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete delivery via charging conveyor / transverse conveyor
  • Offset mould on the left side in the machine's direction of travel

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 150
  • SP 250
  • SP 500

Slipforming water gutters or canals

Slipform pavers are capable of producing water gutters or canals of the most diverse cross-sections or shapes. The vibrators are placed inside the concrete mould when paving in offset, and are arranged so as to ensure uniform consolidation of the concrete even in small or complex paving moulds.

Shown here:

  • SP 500 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete delivery via charging conveyor
  • Offset mould on the left side in the machine's direction of travel

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 150
  • SP 250
  • SP 500

Slipforming kerbstones

Slipform pavers are extraordinarily fast and efficient when it comes to producing kerbstones. The paving mould can be mounted on the left or on the right side of the chassis.

Shown here:

  • SP 150 on 3 crawler tracks
  • Concrete delivery via charging auger and chute
  • Offset mould on the right side in the paver's direction of travel

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 150

  • SP 500

Paving paths in offset application

Depending on the number and arrangement of their crawler tracks, Wirtgen slipform pavers are capable of also paving paths and other concrete surfaces in offset application.

Shown here:

  • SP 250 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete delivery via charging conveyor
  • Cantilevering offset mould on the paver's left side when seen in the direction of travel

  • SP 500
  • SP 850 (consult factory)

Paving different profiles in offset application

Offset moulds can be designed in almost any given shape, which allows kerbstones, drainage gutters, cable ducts or special profiles to be fully integrated into their environment or to be incorporated into existing structures.

Shown here:

  • SP 500 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete delivery via charging conveyor
  • Combined profile of traffic parapet and road shoulder

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 150
  • SP 250
  • SP 500
  • SP 850 (consult factory)

Applications in inset paving

Paving different profiles in inset application

Inset paving is capable of producing any given monolithic profile. Contrary to offset paving, the paving mould is mounted between the slipform paver's crawler tracks.

Shown here:

  • SP 500 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete delivery via charging conveyor
  • Paving a wall for a V-shaped canal

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 150
  • SP 250
  • SP 500
  • SP 850 (consult factory)

Applications in concrete slab paving

Slipforming rural roads

The concrete pavement is slipformed between the paver's crawler tracks. Space requirements for the job site are kept to a minimum, because Wirtgen slipform pavers have a small loading gauge.

Shown here:

  • SP 250 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete delivery via charging auger
  • Paving a 3 m wide rural road

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 250
  • SP 500
  • SP 500 Vario
  • SP 850
  • SP 850 Vario

Slipforming urban roads

Urban concrete roads can be finished with the super smoother in a final work step of the paving operation, giving them superior riding properties.

Shown here:

  • SP 500 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete distribution via spreading auger
  • Paving a 5.50 m wide road pavement

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 500 / SP 500 Vario
  • SP 850 / SP 850 Vario
  • SP 1200

Motorway construction

Wirtgen slipform pavers are extraordinarily efficient when used in motorway construction. Dowel bars and tie bars are inserted into the concrete automatically. The large pavers - SP 1500, SP 1500 L and SP 1600 - are capable of paving concrete slabs across the full carriageway width and in single-layer or dual-layer application.

Shown here:

  • Slipform paving train SP 1500 L
  • Paving a 11.25 m wide motorway carriageway
  • 20 cm bottom concrete layer, 8 cm top concrete layer

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 500 / SP 500 Vario (single-layer)
  • SP 850 / SP 850 Vario (single-layer)
  • SP 1200 (single-layer)
  • SP 1500 (single-layer)
  • SP 1500 L (single-layer or dual-layer)
  • SP 1600 (single-layer or dual-layer)

Airport construction

Wirtgen slipform pavers are ideal candidates for the construction of airport runways, taxiways and other traffic surfaces. Finishing beam and super smoother, burlap or texture curing machine can be used in any given combination, ensuring superior functional properties of the completed surface. Further options enable paving on previously laid steel reinforcements, and paving with special profiles.

Shown here:

  • SP 1600 set up for a paving width of 10 m
  • Wireless levelling control
  • Concrete distribution via spreading plough
  • Paving parking areas at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 850 / SP 850 Vario (single-layer)
  • SP 1200 (single-layer)
  • SP 1500 (single-layer)
  • SP 1500 L (single-layer or dual-layer)
  • SP 1600 (single-layer or dual-layer)

Slipforming track profiles in railway construction

Wirtgen slipform pavers are eminently suitable for producing track profiles in railway construction, such as the so-called "slab track", because they are capable of processing dry concrete mixtures. This method requires the production of a concrete profile that will later accommodate the rails, and is used for the construction of all types of railway lines, from tram to high-speed train.

Shown here:

  • SP 500 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete distribution via spreading auger
  • Paving the track profile for a high-speed train

Machines suitable for this application:

  • SP 500
  • SP 850

Paving hydraulically bound base layers

Slipform pavers are ideally suited for economically efficient paving of hydraulically bound base layers. A special device allows them to cut pre-determined breaking points during the paving operation.

Shown here:

  • SP 850 on 4 crawler tracks
  • Concrete distribution via spreading plough
  • Dual-lane hydraulically bound base layer forming the subgrade of a track profile for high-speed trains
