Getting ready for the Olympics – More than 30 Wirtgen milling machines rehabilitate road network of the Chinese capital just in time

Transportation – the real challenge for a smooth start

It is not only the Olympic committee and the international athletes count-ing the days for the start of the games on August 8: The responsible road authorities of the city share the excitement for the great event and do everything to show the city at its best. According to latest statistics Beijing is expecting over 3 million domestic and overseas visitors. 3 mil-lion motor vehicles are registered in Beijing. Beijing currently has the highest annual rate of private car growth in China. A well functioning network of expressways, ring roads and city roads is vital for the suc-cess of this historic event: It guarantees a smooth traffic flow and cer-tainly happy visitors. This huge challenge is mastered through the use of market leading road rehabilitation technologies: only the best for the best games in Olympic history! Thus Wirtgen milling machines came into play for the rehabilitation of the existing road network. A simple solution with convincing results.

Comprehensive Wirtgen product range for every application

The job sites in and around Beijing were many and required the whole repertoire of rehabilitation applications from the Wirtgen China customers awarded with the most wanted contracts. More than 30 units of Wirtgen milling machines are helping Beijing to prepare a sophisticated city transportation network for the Olympics.

The uniquely broad product range of the German manufacturer Wirtgen comprises a total of 15 cold milling machine models in all performance classes and for all types of applications. It allows customers to choose the machine best suited from the most modern portfolio of cold milling machines worldwide.

With a major market share in China Wirtgen sets the standard in the cold milling market. This success is due not only to the quality and performance of the machines but also to the aftersales service, training and application consulting Wirtgen China has to offer. With the assembly plant and service centre in Langfang and more service centres in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xi’an, Wirtgen China is “Close to our customers”.

Badaling Expressway rehabilitation: most beautiful cycling course in Olympic history

The Badaling Expressway is one of the main highways linking Beijing to the Badaling stretch of the Great Wall. The expressway is part of the racing course for the road cycling events. The athletes start from Yong-dingmen, pass the Temple of Heaven and Tiananmen Square, the Yuan Dynasty City Wall Relics Palace and the Beijing Olympic Tower to enter then the Badaling Expressway and spurt at Juyongguan Pass.

The rehabilitation project was carried out on sections K32 to K58 of the expressway and the Badaling Expressway Administration Branch (one of the subsidiaries of Beijing Capital Highway Development Co., Ltd.) was the contractor for this job. Director Liu describes the challenge for his company: “Being awarded with this job, we felt both proud and under a lot of pressure. The task requires no interference with the traffic. Our first priority is both productivity and reliability of the machines. Continuous trouble-free operation and high performance is expected and therefore the machines made by Wirtgen, the world’s market leader, are the only choice”.

The repair job took place during the night and also from 12:00 to 18:00 every afternoon. A fleet of 4 large milling machines W 2000 and a small milling machine W 35 DC have proved to be the perfect combination for this milling job. Director Liu adds: “It is a new experience for us to learn what an efficient job can be done with the compact W 35 DC, though small as it is in size. It is not at all difficult to mill even in the most con-fined spaces. The W 35 DC has ensured us with continuous milling op-eration in high speed for flush to kerb milling or milling on bridges”.

Within only 4 weeks about 100,000 m² of RAP was removed and re-placed with a new asphalt wearing course. A 1,500 m long and 12 m wide section was completed in less than 6 working hours every day.

Rehabilitation on city roads around the 3rd Ring: fast access counts

The 3rd Ring Road is a 48-kilometer city road that encircles the city cen-tre of Beijing and links up with important expressways like the Jingjin-tang, Jingkai, Jingshi or even the Airport expressway. The major function of its side roads is to offer fast and convenient access to industrial or residential areas near the Ring Road. Therefore, the rehabilitation of the connecting side roads was a crucial task for the Olympic Games. In the various projects, Wirtgen milling machines got again the full trust from the Wirtgen China customers involved. On individual sections along these side roads, dozens of small and large Wirtgen milling machines were removing damaged asphalt layers. Typical jobs for small milling machines like milling around manhole covers, flush to kerb milling and tie-in milling applications were part of these projects.

Mission completed: Beijing is well prepared, the games can begin

One thing is quite clear before the Olympics even started: the first “unofficial” winners are the customers of Wirtgen China who put their full trust in the reliable Wirtgen milling machine technology to complete the prestigious rehabilitation jobs in and around the city. High performance with costsaving and with highquality results, the milling machines mastered the challenge. The Olympic Games are approaching, the city is ready. Roads connect people. Welcome to Beijing!

Compact machine, “smart” milling with pin-point accuracy: Milling flush to kerb on Badaling Expressway with a W 35 DC.

A small machine that digs deep: Tie-in milling with a 35 DC in Sanlitun (the famous bar street) along a side street of the 3rd Ring Road. The W 35 DC has a maximum milling depth of 110 mm.

A team of small and large Wirtgen milling machines rehabilitates quickly the 6 th Ring Road: the W 35 milling flush to kerb and the W 1900 C milling one of the main lanes with the traffic flowing uninterrupted on the adjacent lane. Traffic disruptions are kept to a minimum.

Wirtgen milling machines rehabilitated many important country roads and expressways around Beijing, here a large milling machine W 2000 with 2 m milling width. The powerful engine, large tracks and a generously dimensioned conveyor system ensure high daily production rates.
